Where, then, the voice of the unheard melody? And the voice of the unheard language?
Letter to Hildegard of Bingen
The Lingua-Ignota1 - or unknown language - is a constructed language, said to be divinely inspired as a Language of the Birds. Queen Morgan2 uses it to communicate with her allies, as a written form of her mother’s similarly secretive whistling language3.
Only a few people know it4, and use it mostly to pass messages between each other.
Footnotes
-
Or, technically, the litterae ignotae is the actual script used for the language. But I needed a shorter term, and this script is tied closely to its language. ↩
-
Here of course as a proxy for Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th century abbess, mystic, polymath and musician who constructed the historical script this is referencing. ↩
-
A fictitious branch of Silbo Gomero, a real and fascinating communication technique. ↩
-
Not just in Britain, but anywhere - because the script was invented by the tight in-group. ↩
