A Motif is In Doubt when there are more¹ Doubt tokens on it than Fame tokens.

The GM may invoke uninvoked² Motifs In Doubt on a player’s roll, granting no benefits. If Doom is triggered, these Motifs will add to the penalties.

2. So if the player invokes the Motif, they still get the normal benefit (if they can). This is about pulling Motifs into play when they’re not to the advantage of the character, not denying the ability for players to still try to use Motifs despite the Doubt. ↩
