“I’m a knight, sir, a companion of the Round Table, and I’m roaming the land to win esteem and honour.”
“To win honour?"
"Yes indeed!”
“And how do you do that?” “I’ll tell you, sir,” said Perceval, “before God I will. As I go riding in search of adventures – and some I encounter are fearful! – I do battle with a host of knights: lots I kill, lots I defeat and lots I capture! And so I enhance my reputation!“…1 Manessier, Third Continuation of Perceval

A metacurrency the glory and recognition gained by your actions, seen or unseen2. Fame is represented by tokens3 which are placed on your Motifs.

Earning It

Successes - both Struggles and Victories - may earn you Fame4, which you may place on a relevant Motif or create a new one to represent something the earned some power in that exchange.

It can also be a reward for other experiences - such as seeing the Holy Grail - or victories that didn’t require a roll, at the GM’s discretion.

Savoring It

Motifs are only available to gain Advantage from when they are empowered by Fame - that is, when there is at least one token of Fame left on that Motif. Having more is not necessary, but can help in avoiding putting the Motif In Doubt or making sure you can keep using it repeatedly.

Certain actions, especially in Montages, can help you shuffle Fame between Motifs

Losing It (WIP)

  • Fragile Motifs can shed Fame when you invoke them and fail regardless.
    • I’m not sure if this should be most motifs or not.
  • There’s also ways to spend it. To heal Shame for instance.
  • You can also lose it, especially by taking ignominious actions.

Footnotes

  1. …”My dear friend,” the hermit said, “I can’t believe what I’m hearing! You say you win honour and esteem by vanquishing knights? So help me God, you rather win the surest damnation for your soul! And I’d say that a man who loses his soul has lost everything!”

  2. Yes, you can gain it from actions done in the dark. Maybe less, and some actions falsely attributed can get you fame - there’s a degree to which it’s about external perception, but in a genre where nothing is ever fully hidden from the heavens.

  3. My design is to use small amber beads. I like amber because it looks cool, but also evoking the idea of a substance “more valuable than gold” in its trade back in the day.

  4. Typically 1 at a time.
