Sometimes you need a track or clock or some kind of sliding scale stat on a page. Erasing is of the Devil, but unlike with a lot of board games where you can slide a token over a track, rpg character sheets tend to be pretty light and loose and get jostled a lot.

A solution is to print the track near the edge of the page and attach a paperclip that you can slide up and down.

I didn’t come up with this - I saw it first in Ironsworn.

There are limitations to this.

  • You need real estate near the edge of the page.
  • Large tracks quickly take up a lot of space. You couldn’t track D&D hitpoints with this, for instance.
  • The paperclip takes up space on the other side of the page, too.
  • Putting a lot of them on a page makes it heavy (especially if they’re all on one side).
